Dr. Tyler R. Johnston is UCI Health orthopaedic surgeon who is fellowship trained in both sports medicine and shoulder surgery. He specializes in the treatment of sports-related musculoskeletal injuries of the upper and lower extremities. His clinical expertise includes arthroscopic reconstructive techniques for the ACL, meniscus and other ligaments, as well as rotator cuff repair, complex shoulder replacement and shoulder instability. Johnston earned his medical degree at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., followed by a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Stanford Hospital. He completed a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C. While at Duke, he served as an assistant team physician for the university's basketball, baseball, football and wrestling teams, as well as the North Carolina Central University football team. Next, he completed an international AO Foundation trauma fellowship in Madrid, Spain, and a shoulder surgery fellowship in Nice, France, with internationally regarded orthopaedic trauma surgeon Dr. Pascal Boileau, developer of several surgical devices and arthroscopy techniques. He is the author of numerous manuscripts in peer-reviewed orthopaedics and sports medicine journals. Having earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering at Stanford University, he also maintains academic interests in biomechanics, surgical decision-making and technique development, as well as clinical outcomes research. He is an invited lecturer on these topics both nationally and internationally. Johnston, who also speaks Spanish.
