Sharon Rosenbaum Smith, MD, is associate chief of breast surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, a part of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute. She sees patients with breast cancer and benign breast disease such as fibroadenoma, fibrocystic changes, and ductal or lobular hyperplasia. She also provides care to people at high risk of developing breast cancer, including those with BRCA mutations or a family history of the disease. Her specialty is breast conservation surgery or lumpectomy, as well as skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomies. She performs sentinel lymph node dissection to determine whether breast cancer has spread. “I bring a comprehensive care approach that treats the whole patient,” says Dr. Rosenbaum Smith. Her treatment plans incorporate exercise, nutrition, and integrative wellness programs such as meditation, massage and yoga. Dr. Rosenbaum Smith earned her medical degree at New York Medical College. She received residency training in general surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and fellowship training in breast surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Nationally renowned, she has been in practice for more than two decades in New York City. She joined Northwell Health in 2021 to expand Lenox Hill Hospital’s multidisciplinary breast cancer program. As part of her team-based approach to care, she collaborates with pathologists, radiologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons, geneticists, integrative therapists and nurse navigators. “Together, we provide individualized treatment plans because no one breast cancer is the same,” she says. “The diagnosis is also a very stressful time for women, and we work to decrease that stress.” In addition to Lenox Hill, Dr. Rosenbaum Smith offers her surgical services and comprehensive treatment plans at the Katz Institute for Women's Heath. Her professional memberships include the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the American Medical Association. Dedicated to educating future breast surgeons, she is assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. For Dr. Rosenbaum Smith, the most fulling part of her job is providing holistic, high-quality treatment and support. “I am committed to offering my patients the best possible care, surgically, physically and emotionally,” she says.
