Dr. Jose Gutierrez is a Florence Irving Associate Professor of Neurology at Columbia University Medical Center in the city of New York. Dr. Gutierrez obtained his Medical degree from University of Guadalajara in Mexico. He completed his Neurology training at University of Miami. During his residency, he obtained a Master in Public Health with major in Biostatistics from Florida International University. He then joined the Department of Neurology at Columbia University Medical Center where he completed a two-year fellowship in Vascular Neurology. Dr Gutierrez is a clinical scientist participating in inpatient and outpatient clinical and educational activities. Dr Gutierrez’s main research interest is brain arterial remodeling in the context of atherosclerosis and aging, and how these changes may alter the risk of stroke and dementia in certain populations. Dr. Gutierrez’s role as Principal Investigator has been supported by grants from the American Heart Association, the Campbell foundation, and the National Institute of Health. Dr. Gutierrez has published > 60 peer-reviewed articles (>35 first-authored), > 12 book chapters, > 30 poster and oral presentations at national and international meetings. Ultimately, Dr. Gutierrez research goal is to find novel disease pathways that may be amenable to modifications and with this, to palliate the societal burden of cerebrovascular disease.
